Brisbane Grammar School has an outstanding 144-year historical commitment to educating boys which is expressed both in terms of academic outcomes and the development of life-long learners. Each boy is encouraged and supported to discover and fulfil his unique potential within an academic program that aims to develop a broad knowledge base, higher order thinking skills and dispositions that promote intelligent behaviour.
As educators and lifelong learners ourselves, we aspire to a learning culture that is never complacent. We constantly review and develop our programs, practices and facilities, seeking that optimal blend of tradition and innovation.
Our academic curriculum is complemented by a broad educational offering of cultural, sporting, personal development and service programs which the boys are encouraged to explore widely. These pursuits are considered an equally important element of their overall growth, learning and socialisation, in addition to contributing to the many happy and enjoyable store of school memories we hope they will gather during their time at Brisbane Grammar School.
- Brian R Short (Headmaster).Opened in 1868, Brisbane Grammar School is an independent day and boarding school catering for 1400 boys from Years 6 to 12. Located on a wonderfully landscaped site overlooking the Brisbane CBD, the School is extensively resourced across its academic, student welfare and extracurricular programs. Underpinned by values of endeavour, learning, respect, leadership and community, the School’s purpose is to educate boys by nurturing their intellectual, physical and emotional well-being to become thoughtful, confident men of character who contribute to their communities.
The School’s has a proud history of outstanding and consistent academic results. With a learning culture rich in intellectual challenge, engagement and support, the School aims to equip students with the capacity to imagine and create their futures. Brisbane Grammar School is a recognised leader in pedagogy and curriculum design, and commits substantial human, physical and technical resources to the pioneering development and delivery of 21st century teaching and learning. The newly opened Lilley Centre combines technology rich, cutting edge, flexible learning spaces with a well-resourced library and programs designed to assist students to navigate their learning in the knowledge era. The use of individual tablet PCs creates a 1:1 mobile digital learning environment which supports the School’s curriculum and learning frameworks and has resulted in exciting and innovative approaches to teaching.
In 2003, the School adapted elements of middle schooling to deliberately focus on the important transition from a primary school learning environment to the more independent learning demands of secondary schooling. Catering for boys in Years 6 to 8, the Middle School has its own distinct precinct, providing appropriate levels of both separation from and integration with the upper part of the School. An engaging, rigorous, and stimulating curriculum is delivered by specialist middle school teachers passionate about the education of adolescent boys.
Grammar’s extracurricular program plays an important role in providing the balanced educational experience which underpins the School’s philosophy. All boys are encouraged to explore the wide ranging cultural, sporting and service programs on offer. The School also operates an extensive student welfare program which supports, encourages and guides the students. An extensive personal development curriculum, including a significant student leadership program and highly developed outdoor education experiences, complement this program.
For boys who are due to commence Year 8. Based on performance in the annual ACER Scholarship Examination and interview with the Headmaster.
